SQUAMISH ESTUARY, SQUAMISH BC

!!!A FEW BLOCKS FROM CITY HALL!!!
THE LEAST PROTECTIVE STATUS FOR THE SQUAMISH ESTUARY
"WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA"
ACCOMMODATES HUNTING
WILL CITY HALL REFUSE TO HAVE
"FIREARMS DISCHARGED WITHIN THE DISTRICT" ACCORDING TO LAW?

I KNOW A PIT BULL WHO WOULD RETURN FROM THE GRAVE

FOR THE JOB OF CHASING GEESE OFF THE SOCCER FIELDS!!!

Geese on the fields is the lame excuse for this atrosity
as if there area no other methods!

The geese are easily disturbed and in the estuary the
disturbances are many :
  • dogs on the loose bound into the marsh
  • boaters, sea planes, etc. race n roar thru the narrow channels
  • much of the protected area shoreline is coated with bunker oil
  • development of condos and marinas create noise & pollution and hardship for the geese.

RESULTS

The vote was against Third Reading.  This is against the zoning change to the Official Community Plan for the Red Point development.  The zoning will remain Tourism/Commercial for now.  There is always a proposal for OCP change.

There was a Public Hearing of over 3 hours.

It seems to me unnecessary for the developer to be 4 years into an expensive housing project before Squamish Council votes on the required zoning change.  This was done tonight at the required public hearing before third reading.

It would be better for developers who set their project plans on a site that would need to be rezoned to have First and Second Reading and the Public Hearing immediately.  Third reading would then involve the inclusion of conditions to be met that are raised by Council and the public.  This would evolve over time as the developer would plan to build within the limits of the outcome of the public hearing.

Fourth reading would not be the usual fomality.  Fourth reading would be done when all conditions are met by the developer according to the zoning and the circumstances.

I offer this as the public hearing is usually a formality with few people to speak to zoning changes.  The zoning changes usually pass.  In fact this is probably the only residential development proposal not to be given the requested rezoning.  It is certainly not for the Squamish populace to complain about development when this show of opposition achieves the goal to deny the zoning change and there are few others with me when I oppose zoning changes to the OCP.

If the next project for the site of Red Point is a campground, it will be built KOA style, like a parking lot with no trees.
The zoning would allow for this.
Would Squamish Council???

SQUAMISH SCENERY

Dear Robin, Kim, Peter, Squamish Council
I am attaching a photo which shows the extent of the scenery background for a scene in MEN IN TREES.

Working on The Guard yesterday I realize their background scenery from the Yacht Club dock will include hospital hill and the Red Point trees.

To accommodate the Red Point footprint of 216 units all the trees will have to be killed.

The trees shown behind Red Point pictures are on the property behind the Red Point property.

It is important for the District of Squamish employees and Squamish Council to accommodate the forest watershed, which is interdependant with the estuary and the future of the planet food and air supplies.

I lost my job when MEN IN TREES was cancelled.  Accommodating the film industry depends on consistent background scenery.  Films are made here at great expense and bring many people to work in Squamish and to visit. The tv series are based on small towns within a healthy natural setting.

The information I have is that the Squamish Yacht Club is to be relocated, as there are plans for a condominium development on the site.

The OCP is still in effect and it is misleading for developers to conform to a 'Smart Growth Plan' that has not been yet been superimposed onto the Official Community Plan.  The developers of Red Point have this problem as they face the Public Hearing tonight.  There are vocal individuals and groups who will be heard tonight AGAIN and whose opposition will tonight be recorded AGAIN as in the informal gatherings over the 4 years of this project.

Then 7 people, Squamish Council will decide the fate of this scenery and will move onto deciding the fate of the Squamish Scenery on all the other developments proposed for Squamish.
In Nov. there will be another opportunity for people to vote in 7 people to decide the fate of the Squamish Scenery.

Will it be more people more cars more pollution?  Or...  Will there ever be a Squamish Council and Administration to defend the Squamish Scenery, the film industry and the interdependent forest watershed which supplies food and air for the planet?  Only the actions of Squamish Council can answer this question for all those who oppose the destruction of the Squamish Scenery, the film industry and the interdependent forest watershed, which supplies food and air for the planet.

Sincerely
Deb McBride

The District of Squamish has never preserved the estuary which includes the forest watersheds and the foreshore.  This project will set precedent for more of the same and the removal of this young forest surrounding the last Planning Assessment Area of the Squamish Estuary Management Plan.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Lot of wasted trees and money with the "turn-around" for Red Point northbound traffic.

The Red Point northbound traffic has the right to use the traffic intersection at the Cleveland Ave. entrance to Squamish and they will use it.
That is a lot of extra traffic at Rose Park!

Savin the Scenery

HMMM...
It concerns me that the perfect circle of growth of 40 years is to be destroyed so carelessly...

The geese at home in this marsh are these to be disturbed
and shot for seeking refuge on the soccer fields?

The shore of their private peninsula; the heart of the Upper Mamquam Blind Channel.
is it to be invaded more easily and used as a pedestrian
throughofare and party area?

We'll know Tues. July 15th, 08 online at squamish.ca 7pm for the
PUBLIC HEARING on RED POINT in the SQUAMISH COUNCIL MEETING.
